Allen Iverson Joins Ice Cube's Basketball League For Retired NBA Players

Former NBA veteran, Allen Iverson is set to join Ice Cube's three-on-three basketball league, which has several other retired NBA stars as its members. The Hall of Fame guard will serve as a head coach/player in the new BIG3 three-on-three professional basketball league that is slated to launch this summer.

He will be one of eight dual head coach/players in the league, which is backed by entertainment icon Ice Cube and has Roger Mason as president and commissioner.

Iverson played 14 seasons in the NBA, most of which was for the Philadelphia 76ers. The was NBA's 2001 MVP and the number one overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft out of Georgetown. He was was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last year, Rollingstone reports.

He announced his association with BIG3 during a press conference on Wednesday. "When I got the call, it was a no brainer," he said, paying respect to Ice Cube. "That's O'Shea [Jackson]. You don't turn that down ... I just wanted to be a part of it, and I hope me being a part of it makes it a success,"Iverson said.

The 41-year-old point guard also hopes that BIG3 would continue and become an important part of the basketball culture. Retired NBA legends that signed with BIG3 include Gary Payton, Kenyon Martin, Chauncey Billups, Jason Williams, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson.

They are among the players committed to the half-court league that are set to travel throughout eight cities and venues this summer

BIG3 will present half-court three-on-three games and is expected to begin its tour in June this year. Ice Cube announced the league last month, saying that he was sick of seeing his heroes retire and not play anymore, according to TheVertical.

It is reported that Iverson will appear at a news conference in New York on Wednesday to discuss his part in the league's summer launch. He played his final NBA game in 2010 for the Philadelphia 76ers.
