'Outlander' Star Sam Heughan Wants To 'Play Doctor Who' Someday

Sam Heughan may be starring in his own breakout series, "Outlander" on cable network Starz which is set to release its third season this year but this doesn't mean that the Scottish actor is not open to playing other roles as well. In fact, he may have his eye out for something of the Doctor Who variety.

According to a report by Bleeding Cool, Heughan may be keen to fill Peter Capaldi's shoes when he decides to retire from his role as Doctor Who. The long-running sci fi series has become known for changing the cast for its lead character every few seasons and the role is currently being played by fan favorite Capaldi.

While watching an episode of Doctor Who, Heughan tweeted: "Peter Capaldi for President," to which a fan responded by asking him if he would like to play the role someday.

"I'd vote for that," he replied.

Should Capaldi choose to retire from the role, it would not be a problem for Heughan to fill the role since production for Outlander is not a year round event and does have breaks.

It wasn't the first time that Heughan has expressed his admiration for the show. In an interview  with RadioTimes in 2015, he said that he has been asking his friend Mark Gatiss, who writes for the show, to write him in as a guest in the show. He was even psyched about the possibility of a crossover.

Meanwhile, a recent interview with Peter Capaldi  revealed that the current doctor has no intention of leaving the show anytime soon, saying he loved the role and the show.

When asked about when he might feel the need to move on from the part, he simply said: not for a long long time," since he was still having fun entertaining the viewers hooked to the show.
