Microsoft launched Windows RT which was basically a different version of Windows 8 based on the ARM architecture. So, traditional software design for windows was compatible with this version and it supported only a few applications which were made available in the Windows App Store.

According to recent leaks and reports published on Slashgear, Microsoft is working on a similar version of Windows RT which will be based on Windows 10. The new version of Windows is being called "Windows Cloud." However, contrary to its name, it is not related to any Microsoft cloud products.

As per ZDNet, this new version of Windows has been discovered inside some of the recent test builds. The Windows 10 Cloud will be a simplified version of Windows 10 and is designed to run only certain applications from the Windows Store. The Windows Cloud will offer "Universal Windows Platform" or UWP apps which will not allow traditional win32 software. But Microsoft has tools to convert regular Win32 software into a UWP app.

Windows 10 Cloud might not offer versatility because of its compatibility with a small number of applications but it will offer a high security since the apps are installed only via Windows App Store. Hence, it might rival Google Chromebooks which also have a similar architecture for the applications. The slimmed down version of Windows 10 will only be available on low-end devices.

Windows 10 Cloud will make laptops much cheaper and the devices can be used in schools and emerging markets. However, application compatibility will be a major concern for the new OS since the full-fledged win32 software will not be compatible with Windows 10 Cloud. Microsoft needs to design tools to convert native win32 software to Windows 10 Cloud compatible apps to reap benefits of its new OS. Microsoft's slimmer version of Windows 10 is expected to debut around April this year.
