DJI is the name synonymous with powerful drones that capture aerial footage at a great quality. However, the company is not limited to drones and has an action camera up its sleeves too. DJI Osmo 4K is a hand-held action camera capable of shooting steady and cinematic 4K video even when the camera is shaky and moving.

DJI Osmo 4K is basically a gimbal mounted 4K action camera that produces stable and clear UHD videos. A gimbal is nothing but a stabilizer which allows super smooth cinematic video even when the hands are moving and shaky. As reported by PCMag, DJI Osmo is an entire hand-held system with features and customizations specific for the hand operation.

DJI Osmo 4K consists of three parts - a Zenmuse X3 gimbal with a 4K camera, a handle with all the control buttons and a 10.8Wh battery. The whole system weighs around 500g. The camera is powered by a 12 Megapixel Sony EXMOR R sensor and can record up to 4K resolution videos at 24fps with a maximum bitrate of 60Mbps. DJI Osmo 4K is able to record 1080p videos at 60fps and 120 fps as reported by Engadget. Still photos are also possible with the Osmo and it captures 12 Megapixel JPEG or RAW photos. The footage is captured on a microSD card.

The gimbal and handle on the DJI Osmo are steady and robust. The handle features Wi-Fi button and Osmo can be controlled via a smartphone or a tablet via DJI GO app. Also, Osmo has a modular system and the camera combo can be swapped with X5 and X5R cameras which offer higher resolution and support Micro Four Thirds and their lens mounts.

DJI's hand-held camera is remarkable in capturing high-resolution 4K footage. There is a directional pad for smoother moves. However, battery life is a major concern as DJI Osmo is only able to record for around one hour of 4K video. Also, the built-in mic is not good for the recordings sounds during videos. The DJI Osmo 4K system can be purchased for around $700 in the US and considering the price tag, it offers great bang for the buck.
