'Fifty Shades Darker' Gets Shade from Critics

"Fifty Shades Darker" is currently the most "it" topic between moviegoers, critics and the BDSM community. Because it deals with something sensitive, sensual, and overtly sexual. Its predecessor, "Fifty Shades of Grey" also broke the movie world and the Internet at the time of its release. It is so appealing to its catered audience but what do critics make of it?

ScreenCrush wrote a review about the latest BDSM-themed movie and said that only masochists could possibly love "Fifty Shades Darker". And these masochists surely appreciate it as it remains faithful to the dark romance between Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). It picks up where the first movie left off, when Ms. Steele and Mr. Grey parted ways because they had different tastes when it comes to bedroom adventure.

Sure, Mr. Grey is trying to change his ways because he wants Ms. Steele back in his life (and on his bed, most likely). However, this conflict, and many others, is quickly resolved in the almost two hours it takes to sit through this mess of a movie. Whatever appeal "Fifty Shades Darker" has is lost in the conundrum that is Ana and Christian's relationship.

Empire also bemoans the loss of the first "Fifty Shades" director Sam Taylor-Johnston and screenwriter Kelly Marcel. According to the online publication, the directing and screenwriting talents of the two lent the first movie some sense of style. But with James Foley now at the helm, "Fifty Shades Darker" is a direct slap to the face. Christian and Ana's relationship is a repetitive cycle of romantic dates, dramatic break-ups and amazingly quick make-ups. If that sounds familiar, that is because it is the same plot of the antecedent.

Dakota Johnson, however, keeps up her skillful acting. Jamie Dornan, on the other hand, remains as impassive as ever in "Fifty Shades Darker".
