The Touch ID feature of Apple iPhone will be leaving the next generations of iPhones, starting with iPhone 8. The Touch ID will leave along with the home button. But new features are coming along the way, and it will be something more on your face than on your fingers.

As reported by MacRumors, JPMorgan Analyst Rod Hall claims that the new iPhone 8 will feature a front-facing 3D laser scanner for facial recognition. As Apple decided to remove the Home Button, which is essential for Touch ID, face identification is rather a possible course of action for Apple. The Home button would be replaced with the edge-to-edge OLED display.

According to The Verge, this new iPhone feature will be erasing the issues from Touch ID that occurs when the sensor cannot function when wet. It will also make the unlocking of iPhone 8 possible while wearing gloves.

Use of VR/AR experience is expected to also be more pleasant with the 3D laser scanner. The said 3D scanner can scan the user's hand and real world objects and integrate it into an augmented reality view. With this, a new game experience will possibly be available and it will also be an edge to Apple.

Other uses of the 3D face scanner are also expected. According to Hall, developers is likely to develop an API that works from scanning shoe sizes for online orders to bike sizes. Apple iPhone 8 is expected to come as early as WWDC 2017 which will happen on June 5. The iPhone 8 is said to feature more biometric technologies that will replace the Touch ID. One of these techs is the iris recognition which will complement the face scanner. This would be the first hardware change for the iPhone product line since 2010 so fans are expecting this to be big.
