Social media platform Twitter is dealing with abusive behavior in an old-fashioned way. Users who exhibit abusive behavior in the site are given a "time out" of sorts by the system.

Starting the program a few days before, Twitter places an account on a limited status for certain time and only allows followers to see the posts. As Buzzfeed reported, the move effectively limits the range of tweets Twitter deems as potentially abusive behavior. Users are also notified via email regarding the service limitations.

While it does sound like a good way to filter the messages that roam its site, it also has its limitations. For one, it does not rely on words alone, but on trends and patterns. According to The Verge, a single profanity-laced tweet would not trigger the system, but an identified pattern would surely make the mark. Twitter has kept mum about the exact way the filter works, fearing that "trolls" would use it to trick the system.

Not all users are particularly happy with the move Twitter took. Some, who are usually on the receiving end of the abuse, are happy about the addition of the filter. Others, on the other hand, feel that the move is a way to block their freedom of speech, as well as for Twitter to block those they do not agree with. Currently, Twitter has not responded on this.

Twitter's response to abusive behavior on their site has been long overdue. The company has been receiving criticisms about how they take on the issue of online abuse, with most pointing at Twitter's glacial pace in handling the issue. Now that the move is in place, many are still unhappy with the platform. Many are also wondering if Donald Trump, known for his tongue in cheek attitude and colorful vocabulary, would be affected by the block.
