GM Announces Automatic Car Driving Technology 'Super Cruise' to Rival Tesla's Autopilot

General Motors will finally launch its Super Cruise technology next year, which is said to rival Tesla's Autopilot mode. The roll-out was originally scheduled for 2016 but GM has now made official that its automatic driving feature will debut in the 2018 Cadillac CT6.

Fans are excited over the announcement by the company as the semi-automatic driving feature is finally being rolled out to the end customers after years of testing and research. The rollout took one more year as the company was testing security features and has now designed the safest system possible, Tech Crunch reported.

The Super Cruise technology is like Tesla's AutoPilot and can take control over the vehicle in the highway settings. It can maintain the vehicle according to the lane positions and can even adapt vehicle's speed based on the surrounding traffic. However, the feature will be limited and is meant to work perfectly on "divided, limited-access highways" with "defined on & off" ramps, The Verge reported.

General Motors has built a new system which will track the driver's head position by using infrared cameras which will be built into the steering wheel. This will make sure that the driver is paying attention when the Super Cruise mode is on and alerts will be sent to the driver using the light notifications and audio alerts. If the driver does not respond to the alerts, the safety measures will stop the vehicle automatically.

GM is deploying a fleet of LiDAR mapping cars that will image the highways where Super Cruise technology is used and this information will be available over-the-air. This technology will be a paid add-on costing $2,500 and customers can decide to equip their vehicles with it or not.

Super Cruise is a great innovation from GM but Tesla is already working on sending its autonomous cars on a coast-to-coast test. The automatic driving vehicles are now competing against each other and hopefully, this will not compromise on the security of the driver.
