"Narcos" Season 3 will still tackle the drug trade, according to showrunner Eric Newman. Pablo Escobar's death paves the way for the show to focus on the drug kingpin's successors, the Cali Cartel and its leader Gilberto Rodriguez.

Fans are understandably curious what the storyline for "Narcos" Season 3 will be about, following the death of Escobar. How will the show go on now that its main antagonist is dead? Newman assured fans that the series does not only tackle the Columbian drug kingpin's story. It follows the drug trade in general.

This is why the show is not titled after Escobar's name since it does not only focus on him. The series explores the world of the drug cartel as a whole. With this said, "Narcos" Season 3 follows the story of Escobar's successors in the drug industry, this time on the Cali cartel and on Rodriguez. According to The Express, actor Damian Alcazar plays the role of Rodriguez.

"I had always had in mind to tell the continuing story of cocaine. Jose [Padilha], Doug [Miro], Carlo [Bernard] and I wanted to tell a story about the drug war and never just about one person or organization," Newman told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about "Narcos" Season 3.

Likewise, Newman clarified that Rodriguez and Escobar do not share the same status as the show's main antagonist. They have different stories when it comes to the drug cartel, so Rodriguez does not necessarily become the new villain in "Narcos" Season 3. "Pablo was protected by the people who loved him and Cali was protected by a political and economic system that they had rather ingeniously built," the showrunner further told the publication.

"Narcos" Season 3 is scheduled to air on Netflix in 2017, although there is no exact release date yet. Newman teased that the story behind the Cali Cartel and Rodriguez's life might be a two-season arc. This means it could go until the confirmed Season 4.
