Narcos Season 2 will premiere in August on Netflix and before the release of the hit thriller show, speculations are rife about the future of the series. However, from the recent updates it looks like Netflix will have to cancel the show after the end of Season 2.

Narcos is set and filmed in Colombia and Season 1 followed the story of notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (played by Wagner Moura), who became a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine. The series also focuses on Escobar's interactions with other drug lords, various political delegates and DEA agents. In all the released 10 episodes, we got to see the 15 years of Escobar's life that include his final escape from the prison in the summer of 1992. Given the real history of the drug lord, he only has 18 months to live before his assassination. So, one cannot possibly drag the story of 18 months in more seasons.

In an interview with Slash Film, Narcos showrunner Eric Newman stated that when they started working on the series, they knew the final fate of Escobar and there is no way one can keep him alive for long.

"At the point of Escobar's escape which is the summer of 1992, Escobar has 18 months to live. That's not something we can change. To stretch that out beyond another season would be disingenuous of us. That story was always designed to have an ending."

So what will happen after Escobar's death? Well, neither the drugs vanished nor did the different drug lords. Newman further stated that after the Escobar's death in Narcos, there are chances that the show will focus on someone else, like what Showtime did with their character Nicholas Brody (played by Damian Lewis) in Homeland.

"What they've done with Homeland after losing Damian Lewis after season three is sort of amazing. To tell you the truth, most of my thinking is about season two because we're in the middle of it and I haven't thought that much about where do we go from here. I just want the best version of season two," Newman further stated.

It was announced on Sept. 2, 2015 by Deadline that Netflix has renewed the crime thriller series for Season 2, although there is no official premiere date as yet.
