James Gunn took to social media to thank fans for their support on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." The director also subtly revealed the release of its sequel, Vol. 3.

Gunn took to his Facebook page to post a lengthy message of gratitude for the fans, who made "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" a blockbuster hit. Amid his message of thanks, the director mentioned Vol. 3. He revealed that the team will begin work on the sequel over the next three years.

"Thank you so much, my Facebook friends, for supporting me over the past two and a half years, and thank you for all the messages letting us know we've keyed into the frequency of your hearts. I love you all, and I'll continue being here with you over the next three years as we create Vol. 3," Gunn wrote. The director subtly revealed that the release of the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" sequel will happen sometime in 2020.

According to Slashfilm, this timeline coincides with the release of the previous film. "Guardians of the Galaxy" Vol. 2 came out three years after the original movie was released in 2014. Likewise, a release in 2020 for Vol. 3 fits with the timeline of the films under the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" sequel takes place after "Avengers 4." It reportedly kicks off the next 10 years of the MCU or opens the next phase of movies for the studios. Likewise, Vol. 3 is the final movie for guardians Groot, Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax and Rocket Raccoon.

Gunn said that the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" sequel ends their story. Drax, Groot, Rocket, Gamora, and Star-Lord will be replaced with new guardians after Vol. 3. "I think that there could be a Guardians Vol. 4, but it would not be the same," Gunn told the Toronto Sun.

Gunn has yet to reveal more details about the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" sequel. In the meantime, fans can watch out for more updates on Vol. 3 from his Facebook page.
