"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" characters Groot, Gamora, Drax and Star-Lord will no longer appear in succeeding films after Vol. 3. James Gunn said there will be new characters and a report claimed Sylvester Stallone's Starhawk is likely to take the lead in Vol. 4.

Gunn said that Groot, Gamora, Drax and Star-Lord will only appear until the sequel of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." He thinks it would be an overhaul if they continue to appear in the franchise since by then their stories have already been fleshed out. The director said that their story ends in Vol. 3.

"I think the first three movies tell a single story and that story is pretty simple. I think that there could be a Guardians Vol. 4, but it would not be the same," Gunn said in an interview with the Toronto Sun. He added that the characters in the fourth movie will be completely new.

This brings the question, who will take the lead in the fourth film? By then, fans would have already grown to love the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" characters, enough to miss them in Vol. 4. According to Comicbook, it is likely that Sylvester Stallone's Starhawk will take the lead in the fourth film. His introduction in the second movie supposedly builds up to his importance in the sequel.

It would make sense if Stallone's Starhawk takes center stage in Vol. 4 instead of the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" characters. After all, he is one of the original guardians. Likewise, Gunn admitted that he wants to see more of Stallone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU.)

It is also interesting to point out that Aleta (Michelle Yeoh) and Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames) are in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." They are also original members of the guardians like Starhawk. It is safe to assume then that these three characters will be the new guardians in Vol. 4.
