Jumper Kills 5-Year-Old: Man Commits Suicide, Lands on Young Girl Outside South Korean Apartment Building

In a tragic story out of South Korea, a suicide jumper plunged to his death, resulting in the death of a 5-year-old girl walking below. In an Associated Press report, South Korean police say a 39-year-old man jumped from the 11th floor of his apartment building on Wednesday, dying immediately. However, the man fell on a 5-year-old girl who was walking with her parents on the sidewalk outside the building. The girl reportedly died later from brain damage and broken bones.

The Christian Science Monitor reports that South Korea is no stranger to suicides, as the country has the world's highest suicide rate. The country's suicide rate continues has risen over recent years, a troublesome problem for the country.

This particular case is even more difficult to understand when considering a man's suicide ended up taking the life of an innocent girl. According to the AP report, witnesses saw the man jump, but as of yet there has been no suicide note found and no reason for why the man took his own life. The incident occurred in Busan, a southeastern port city of South Korea.

Suicides have been a controversial topic over recent years and this case is sure to spur more debate, with an innocent girl's life being taken. There is no set reason as to why South Korea's suicide numbers are so high. However, in the Christian Science Monitor report, they note how South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare cited socioeconomic concerns and one person households as a possible reason for the rise in suicides.
