The big news in Hollywood for this Father's Day weekend of June14 to 16 was the opening of the latest Superman movie "Man of Steel." The film came into the weekend with huge expectations from Warner Bros. with a whole new cast, including Henry Cavill as the new Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and a number of other big name stars such as Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, and Kevin Costner. So how did "Man of Steel" do at the box office? Well, the Christopher Nolan and Zach Snyder film earned estimated opening weekend earnings of $125 million, which would make it the biggest June opening of all time.

According to ComingSoon.net, "Man of Steel" raked in $9 million at midnight screenings on Thursday night along with an additional $12 million through special Wal-Mart screenings. Then on Friday the movie earned an estimated $44 million, making it the largest Friday opening for a June movie ever. "Man of Steel" is expected to come in first in the box office this weekend, bringing in $125 million. The official numbers will be available Monday.

As for the rest of the movies this weekend, Seth Rogen's comedy "This is the End," came in second place with an expected $20.5 million over the weekend and $32 million over its first five days. "Now You See Me" starring Jesse Eisenberg came in third place with $10 million for overall earnings of $80 million for the film.

Filling out the top 5 were "Fast and Furious 6" with just under $10 million and "The Purge" with $8.2 million. The big question going into next weekend and future weeks will be whether or not "Man of Steel" can continue to dominate at the box office, like "Iron Man3" was able to accomplish. Next weekend will see new movies "World War Z" starring Brad Pitt and "Monsters University" hitting the theaters.
