Oprah Winfrey is easily a household name thanks to her career as a talk show host. She made around $77 million last year so when a shop clerk in Zurich, Switzerland, told her that she could not afford an expensive handbag, the whole world (besides this guy) became super confused.
It turns out this person simply didn't recognize Oprah and assumed she could not afford the $40,000 hand bag she wanted to pick up for Tina Tuner's wedding. Of course this means that the man was pretty much super racist.
In fact, the shopkeeper refused to show Winfrey the handbag after being asked a total of three times by the television mogul.
"No. It's too expensive," the shopkeeper told her when she asked the first time.
"One more time, I tried," she told Entertainment Tonight. "I said, 'But I really do just want to see that one,' and the shopkeeper said, 'Oh, I don't want to hurt your feelings,' and I said, 'Okay, thank you so much. You're probably right, I can't afford it.' And I walked out of the store."
This sounds like that scene from Pretty Woman, right? Unfortunately Oprah did not follow through with the whole "rubbing it in the salesperson's face" aspect of the moment.
"I could've had the whole blow-up thing and thrown down the black card, but why do that?" she said. "But that clearly is, you know... [Racism] still exists. Of course it does."
"We are very sorry for what happened to her," Swiss tourism office spokeswoman Daniela Baer said.
"This person acted terribly wrong," the tourism office wrote on Twitter.
"[It was] obviously very regrettable," Zurich Tourism communications director Christian Trottmann added.
