The United Kingdom's Channel 4 News ran a special documentary episode this week entitled "Crazy About One Direction." Since its premiere, the network has been blasted with negative reviews including a Twitter "campaign" aimed to discredit the special. The Channel 4 documentary special "Crazy About One Direction" aired last night in the United Kingdom, resulting in an outcry from fans on Twitter as well as many media sources criticizing the show. Promoted as a look into the world of the fans of the biggest boy band in the world, the special ended up focusing on the more obsessive and over-the-top fans rather than showing a representation of the fan base as a whole. Even fans of Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift have joined the Twitter fight. What do you think Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan think of this special?

One big story from the special was one girl who admitted that she had gotten braces just because Niall did. Other portions focused on girls that would go through anything in order to see the boys. "I just want to be more than a fan," one interviewee said. Others stated: "We can find out literally anything," and, "I'm part of a fandom that can kill you if they wanted..."

So what viewers saw were obvious obsessive fans that were tracked down by the production crew in order to show this other side of the fan base. Sure it makes for good ratings and yes these girls are real people, but it is an inappropriate representation of the fans as a whole. Perhaps the show should have advertised the fact that the focus would be on the more "unique" fans.
