NBC has decided to reboot the popular Angela Lansbury series Murder, She Wrote with Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer leading the new series. This reboot is described as a "reimagining of the series with a light, contemporary take." The original Murder was one of the most successful shows in history, running from 1984 to 1996. NBC hopes to garner the same results with this new reboot.

If the series gets picked up, this would be Spencer's first regular television role. She has guest starred in a number of television shows before.

And it looks like Spencer wants to add some Emmy Awards to her Oscar (which she won for her work on The Help). The original series earned Lansbury 12 straight Emmy nominations and 10 Golden Globe mentions. She won the Globe four times for her portrayal.

The Hollywood Reporter reports:

NBC's Murder will revolve around a hospital administrator/amateur detective (Spencer) who self-publishes her first mystery novel. It's set in a day where sensational headlines fuel the news and focuses on the character's fascination with true crimes, which propels her to become an active part of the investigations.

Alexandra Cunningham (Desperate Housewives, Prime Suspect, Deception) is set to pen the pilot episode for the rebooted Murder, She Wrote with David Janollari producing. NBC is also planning a comedy reboot of Remington Steele and another Reality Bites project, but this is the first high-profile reboot of the season according to The Hollywood Reporter.
