Last night (Nov. 24), Katy Perry opened up the 2013 American Music Awards with a performance of "Unconditionally." A moment that was meant to be full of grandeur and inspire certainly did that, in some regards. However, now the pop star is being called out for her cultural appropriation for the geisha-inspired performance and some are even calling Perry's performance racist.

Perry appeared heavily made up, wearing a semi-kimono for the "Unconditionally" performance. Her face was marked with heavy white powder, big black eyelashes and cherry red lips. Her hair was spread out in little fans as cherry blossoms and an Asian garden scene decorated the stage.

Perry's background dancers, some of whom were actually Asian, also were heavily made up to appear even more ethnic and performed with sun umbrellas in what is now a questionable turn on stage.

So, what's the problem with Perry's AMAs performance? Other than the fact that is was the only showing of Asian culture at all at the very whitewashed AMAs, it also was an unrealistic depiction of life in Japan. The geisha getup is a controversial one, and Perry's outfit along with her dancer made Twitter viewers upset upon tuning into the AMAs.

What do you think? Is Perry's performance racist or is she just celebrating all things Japan? Watch "Unconditionally" from the AMAs below.
