Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are the powerhouse rap duo that isn't afraid to get a little political. Their smash hit "Same Love" addresses the issues in the struggle in the fight for marriage equality. Last night, they took home the American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop album for their debut The Heist. Coming in from a Miami live stream, Macklemore took the award show opportunity to get a little poltical and address one of the biggest issues in America today: racial profiling and gun control.

"Now that I'm sitting here in front of millions of people, I would like to address something extremely important to me. I was talking to my friend Owar before the show and he reminded me of a great Martin Luther King [Jr.] quote. He said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,'" he began before getting in to the meat of his speech. "Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award, I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it.

This is really happening. These are out friends, our neighbors, our peers and our fans, and it's time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it."

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were addressing the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case from over the summer, wherein a young black teenage boy was shot dead while walking home. The case caused tons of controversy following Zimmerman's not guilty verdict and cause huge rifts among the celebrity community.

When Macklemore and Ryan Leiws weren't taking to the soap box, they also took time out to thank their fans and the American Music Awards.

Later in the night, they also performed "Can't Hold Us" from Miami.
