While speaking to Access Hollywood, AskMen publisher James Bassil explained what was so exciting about this year's list: "Sixty-five women made their debut on the Top 99 Most Desirable Women list this year, including 'Community's' Alison Brie (No. 2), 'Blurred Lines'' Emilie Ratajkowski (No. 3) and 'The Wolf of Wall Street' actress Margot Robbie (No. 9). Margot Robbie is probably the most surprising of the rookies, given that she came out of the clear blue sky to land in the top ten on the list."

"We ask both the readers and the staff to take more than just sex appeal into account," he said. "We ask them to consider all the character traits they would look for in a significant other, including personality, ambition, talent, and potential for the year ahead."
