It's been a weird week for Barcelona's soccer franchise. Firstly, they agreed to terms for a new contract for superstar Lionel Messi. Secondly they came minutes away from winning La Liga and lastly, their coach, Gerardo Martino, has resigned from his position as Barcelona manager. Arguably their season wasn't the worst imaginable, but by their previous standards it was deemed far from good enough, and now they will pursue another option.

Martino himself understood that he had no other choice but to leave as this was their first year without a major trophy since the 2007-08 season. "I deeply regret not having achieved the goals that this club has always been set and achieved," he said continuing his apology. "I'm sorry I was unable to deliver. I'd like to thank the club for their confidence in me."

Martino had replaced Tito Vilanova last summer, but left one year into his two-year contract. During his career he did achieve 40 wins in 59 games, but with no success of any level, it was clear his time as coach was coming to an end, whether he was pushed out the door or not. But there is no doubt Martino will miss his players. "These are great players," Martino gushed. "My greatest gratitude goes to the players. They have made me proud."

After watching both Madrid sides dramatically improve it's clear that Barcelona will undergo massive changes to get their franchise in the place it was over the last five years.

What's next for Barcelona, and what's next for Gerardo Martino?
