The 2014 World Cup in Brazil is just around the corner, but star player Cristiano Ronaldo's ailing fitness has his home country's national team worried. Portugal is apparently fretting over the recent FIFA Ballon d'Or award winner because he's dealing with multiple leg muscle injuries that could hinder his World Cup time. Or perhaps he'll miss the event entirely!

What would happen if the best footballer in the world were to miss the biggest football event of the last 4 years?

According to the Portuguese Football Association Ronaldo has a "muscle injury on the back of his left thigh as well as left-leg patellar tendinitis."

"We hope that Cristiano is in good enough shape to play - and to help the team," Ronaldo's star Portugal teammate Nani told reporters this week. "[He] is going well, and he is relaxed about it ... Things are going the right way."

Nani missed the previous World Cup due to a shoulder injury, so he is a great source to talk to about Ronaldo's predicament.

"If for some reason (Ronaldo) is not there, whoever is there playing has to be confident in their ability to get the job done," he said. "The World Cup is a one-of-a-kind challenge. I want to be fully fit, and in top form alongside my teammates. I could not be there last time, but happily, I am here now,"

Portugal faces off against Germany on June 16, 2014, in what is sure to be one of the best opening matches of the tournament. Will we see Ronaldo on the field?
