The San Francisco 49ers and Colin Kaepernick have set the tone for a lot of NFL quarterbacks with their new record-breaking agreement. He has for a long time been aiming to be the best quarterback around, and now his new contract will reflect that, but he will have to show his worth on the football field. The deal will see him in San Francisco until 2020, making it a six-year extension. Kaepernick will earn around $21 million per year, with $61 million guaranteed, making his contract the one with highest guaranteed amount ever.

The 49ers released a statement showing their delight:

"Colin's hard work and dedication have played an integral role in the recent success of the 49ers organization," said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke in a team-released statement. "His work ethic, leadership and on-field production have positively influenced our team, and we look forward to his continued growth in all areas. Our organization always looks to reward our players for their contributions and commitment to the team. Colin's agents, Scott Smith and Jason Bernstein, along with Paraag Marathe and Brian Hampton, should be commended for working diligently to reach an agreement."

Kaepernick was a second round pick in the 2011 draft, and he has blossomed under Jim Harbaugh, so much that they let Alex Smith go. Kaepernick's powerful throws, energetic runs and overall athleticism have made him one of the best QB in the NFL. Kaepernick would of earned $973, 766 this season, but that amount will now become mere pocket change.

The 49ers have come close to being a Super Bowl winning team in recent years, and they evidently believe Kaepernick and a few other players will finally push them to their goal. The six-year contract shows the faith and ambition they have in their superstar, but can he prove his worth on the field?
