Androgynous Supermodel Andreja Pejić Comes Out As A Transgender Woman (VIDEO)

On Thursday, supermodel Andrej Pejic announced to People, Entertainment Tonight and style.com she underwent gender reassignment surgery earlier in the year and has come out as a trans woman. She has changed her name to Andreja.

Pejic, 22, told People, "I want to share my story with the world because I think I have a social responsibility. I hope that by being open about this, it becomes less of an issue."

Pejic exploded onto the scene in 2010 as an the androgynous male model who rose to fame when Carine Roitfeld had him photographed in womenswear for Paris Vogue. Soon after, he was walking runways for everyone from Marc Jacobs to Jean Paul Gaultier.

But, while on top of the world career-wise, Pejic still wasn't happy.

"About a year and a half ago, I reevaluated things. I was proud of my gender nonconforming career. But my biggest dream was to be comfortable in my own body. I have to be true to myself and the career is just going to have to fit around that."

With her decision firmly in place, Pejic started meeting with doctors to continue her transition with sex reassignment surgery.

"I was happy the moment had come - as happy as you can be before a surgery."

After surgery (the details of which she will not reveal), "It was about three months before I felt like myself again."

Pedicis happy to finally be comfortable in her own skin.

 "Every day is like a new revelation," she says. "I'm more comfortable than ever. I feel at a 100 percent."
