As The Strain heads straight toward its first season finale, FX has released a new, behind-the-scenes featurette.

Based on the bestselling Dark Horse Comics series, visionary director/creator Guillermo Del Toro, Lost showrunner Carlton Cuse and Corey Stoll (Ephraim Goodweather) discuss what makes The Master (Robin Atkin Downes) a terrifying, merciless vampire.

In our recent recap, Nora (Mia Maestro) and Eph (Stoll) headed down into the subway tunnels. Not only did they discover Kelly Goodweather (Natalie Brown) lying in the vampire nest, but the duo also had a face-to-face confrontation with The Master. Showing just how powerful he is, The Master grabs Eph and threatens him, promising to take his son away, just like he did with his wife.

Cuse described the antagonist as "a really formidable villain, who has a very compelling backstory."

Just like in the comics, Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley) has been chasing after The Master for six decades. They first met during his time in the concentration camps during World War II. The outside world, though, has know about The Master since even before then.

Del Toro added, "He's gone through serving an emperor in Rome. He was in the Crusades. He is incredibly intelligent, politically very savvy, but at the same time ruthless. He doesn't care about humans."

The footage also reveals concept art, how the wardrobe was put together and the make-up effects team at work. Notice how, in the video below, Downes wears a green piece on his face, which helps the CGI department to remove his nose.

As we mentioned here, it is now The Master's turn to strike back with a vengeance in "Last Rites."
