University of Georgia running back Todd Gurley has been suspended indefinitely from the Bulldogs football team, the University announced on Thursday.

In a statement on Georgia's athletics website, head coach Mark Richt said, "I'm obviously very disappointed. The important thing for our team is to turn all our attention toward preparation for Missouri."

The team provided no further details on the suspension, though according to reports headed largely by SBNation.com, it is believed that Gurley violated the NCAA rules that prohibit student-athletes from accepting money for autographs.

According to SBNation.com writers Spencer Hall and Stephen Godfrey, they received an email on Sept. 30 from a source who claimed to have a tip on Gurley's alleged profits from the sale of his autographs.

"I have video of Todd Gurley doing a private autograph signing ***," the email stated. "He has been paid thousands of dollars for his stuff over the last 18 months. I personally paid him for this signing on the video. I have bought and sold game used equipment from him."

The writers never acted on the email though, explaining, "We let it drop, because the purpose of this website is not to enforce the NCAA's insane bylaws."

Then on the evening of Sept. 9, news of the suspension broke.

According to Sports Illustrated, they too received a tip from an anonymous source, and they are reporting that Gurley is alleged to have profited a total of $400 for signing 80 pieces of memorabilia.

University of Georgia students and football fans are taking the news pretty hard and have created a candlelight vigil for their star outside of the University's Sanford Stadium.

In five games so far this season, Gurley has rushed for 773 yards and scored eight rushing touchdowns.

Fox Sports believes he will likely be out for two or three games.
