It's been a long time coming, but today Oscar Pistorius was finally sentenced. The former track star killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day in 2013, but he pleaded that he believed she was an intruder. He received a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge, and the Reeva case was finally settled, with Oscar cleared of murder, but facing punishment for his culpable homicide charges.

Many wanted him to receive a 10-year sentence, but he was sentenced for five years, and it's expected that he will serve a little under a year behind bars, with the rest spent under house arrest. Many are angry at this sentence, but some are glad that he has received punishment, and that the case is well and truly over.

Oscar's uncle Arnold insisted: "We accept the judgement. Oscar will embrace the opportunity to pay back to society."

He also asked the media to "accept the ruling of court and let us move forward in this process and give us some degree of dignity and privacy."

It's unlikely he will get what he's asked for, but considering the circumstances, Oscar will breathe a huge sigh of relief, knowing he will not spend a long period behind bars, giving him the chance to move on if this was indeed a horrible mistake.

Has he got off lightly, or is this a fair punishment for what was evidently a very difficult case to judge, with so many aspects unknown to the public? At last, the Steenkamp family will be able to grieve.
