Olivia Wilde and fiancé Jason Sudeikis welcomed their first child together, Otis Alexander, in April 2014 and they couldn't be happier. The Cowboys & Aliens actress recently opened up about motherhood and how being a mom has taught her to be selfless.

"The gift of motherhood is the selflessness that it introduces you to, and I think that's really freeing," Olivia told reporters via People at the International Women's Media Foundation's 25th Anniversary Courage in Journalism Awards. "The amazing thing about becoming a parent is that you will never again be your own first priority."

The Longest Week actress cohosted the event that took place in Beverly Hills, California on Tuesday night and had nothing but good things to say about her bundle of joy all night. "He's a very sweet person," the 30-year-old shared about her son. "The empathy that it floods you with-being a mother-I think makes you a better storyteller," she added.

Olivia's family has given her a newfound cause to fight for as well. The Her actress spoke out in support of Proposition 47, which is an initiative that reduces penalties for certain crimes on Tuesday.

"Family is everything. I've always felt that way, but having a baby this year really drove that truism home," Olivia told E! Online. "Being a mother has reinforced and refined my thinking on many issues, including-believe it or not-our criminal justice system. That's why I'm supporting Proposition 47."

She added that she is one of several celebrities endorsing this initiative. Other celebrities include Jay-Z, Cameron Diaz and John Legend. Her speech ended with her encouraging others to join her and vote yes on Prop.47.

Family is at the forefront of Olivia's thoughts these days and she is taking her role as a new mother very seriously. "I take my place in the world a little bit more seriously being a mother ... I hope I can tell stories that somehow benefit the world that Otis will grow up in," the Tron: Legacy star said during the Women's Media Foundation event via People
