A mashup of The Hobbit and The Office on Saturday Night Live? Count us in. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hits theaters this Wednesday, Dec. 17, and with the final installment of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy — based on J.R.R Tolkien's book — set to blow audience's minds, star Martin Freeman hosted Saturday Night Live and delivered a performance for the ages. Joined by "Boom Clap" star and musical guest Charli XCX, Freeman's performance as Bilbo Baggins in The Office: Middle Earth has everybody talking.

On SNL this week, Freeman — self-described as "sort of a funny George Clooney" — hosted with confidence and took part in a range of terrific skits, including ones where he dusted off his Fargo accent to sell water beds and tried to marry to Top Five star Leslie Jones.

As The AV Club pointed out, Freeman's "signature role is that of the put-upon, sensibly baffled straight man," and he used it to great effect. From his role as Tim Canterbury on the original British version of The Office, his "porn star" in Love, Actually and through to Arthur Dent in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, then onto Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit series and his latest roles in Fargo and Sherlock, Freeman has taken the role of the quietly put-out Brit to new heights."

As a guest host Freeman was a revelation, showing off a nous for comedic acting and timing that come with 10 years of being one of the finer character actors working. His monologue featured bunkmate "Maggie Smith" (Kate McKinnon) and Harry Potter villain "Alan Rickman" (Taran Killam) and from there the episode was on a roll — so much so that Rolling Stone called Freeman a "classic host" in the making.

But the obvious highlight was when SNL answered the question: What would happen if The Office was based in Middle-earth? The answer was right on the money. With Bobby Moynihan's Gandalf as a David Brent-esque boss and Taran Killam's Gollum taking the place of Dwight Schrute, it delivers plenty of laughs.

As The Gothamist said, "mashing-up the original U.K. Office with The Hobbit, arguably Freeman's two most famous acting gigs, is so obvious, yet so perfect."

We're inclined to agree! Check it out below.

Later, the show was dominated by the tremendous Charli XCX who, ahead of the release of her new album Sucker, played the crowd an amazing cream short and cut-off top ensemble for her rendition of the smash-hit "Boom Clap."

She also got her hip-thrust on while showcasing "Break the Rules":

You can check Freeman as his "proper" Bilbo when The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens this week — with Hobbit movie marathons available in some areas. You can watch the trailer for it below:
