Game of Thrones creator and author George RR Martin has offered to screen the James Franco and Seth Rogen comedy The Interview, and in the process blasted the "corporate cowardice" displayed by Sony for bowing to North Korean hackers wishes by not showing the movie (which centers around a CIA Kim Jong-Un assassination plot). With fortuitous timing — as HBO released a blink-and-you'll miss it teaser for Game of Thrones Season 5 featuring glimpses of Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Tyrion Lannister and Cersei Lannister — Martin slammed Sony, Regal and AMC and said that the situation was similar to that of Charlie Chaplin and his Hitler-mocking The Great Dictator and that it reminded him of a South Park episode.

Writing on his Live Journal (and proving that he likes his blogging with history levels similar to that of Westeros) Martin said: "In a stunning display of corporate cowardice, Regal, AMC, and every other major theatre chain in the United States have cancelled their plans to show the new Seth Rogen/ James Franco comedy THE INTERVIEW, because of -- yes, seriously, this is not a SOUTH PARK sketch (though I expect it soon will be) -- threats from North Korea."

As The Independent reported, Martin also expresses his disgust at these "gigantic corporations" who "could buy North Korea with pocket change" opting not to show The Interview "because Kim Jong-Un objects to being mocked?"

He adds: "It's a good thing these guys weren't around when Charlie Chaplin made THE GREAT DICTATOR. If Kim Jong-Un scares them, Adolf Hitler would have had them shitting in their small clothes."

Martin points out though, it that even though he hasn't watched The Interview and doesn't know if it's good or bad, "That's not the point", he says. "Whether it's the next CITIZEN KANE or the next PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, it astonishes me that a major Hollywood film could be killed before release by threats from a foreign power and anonymous hackers."

Martin also extended an invitation - should Sony make the film available - for Rogen and Franco to screen the film at his New Mexico Jean Cocteau Cinema, saying "Come to Santa Fe, Seth, we'll show your film for you."

In an update Martin added: "What I do know is that Sony's statement that it "had no choice" but to cancel the film's release is plainly false. It had plenty of choices, and still does."

"The best of those choices," he writes, is have The Interview in independent cinemas on its original opening day of Christmas Day. "I have been in communication with the owners and operators of other independent cinemas and arthouses, and representatives of some of the smaller chains, and I know that hundreds of these venues would gladly screen this film, if only Sony will make it available."

Nice one, George. Now, if you could hurry up with that next book, that'd be great.

Dammit.

Anyway. In happier Game of Thrones news, HBO also offered a sneak peek into GoT Season 5 with a couple of seconds of hints regarding Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Tyrion Lannister and Cersei Lannister in their 'HBO 2014 Yearender' promo. Check it out below: it also features favorites like True Detective and Veep and a sneaky look at The Rock's new TV show, Baller.
