MStars News has learned that Whitney Houston biopic star Yaya DaCosta has decided to split from her husband, Joshua Bee Alafia, according to Essence.

The couple was only married for 2 years and have a 15-month-old son, Sankara Alafia, together.

The former America's Next Top Model contestant will be starring as the late, legendary Whitney Houston in the new biopic, Whitney, slated for next month on Lifetime.

The controversial film was produced by Houston's friend, and former Waiting To Exhale co-star, Angela Bassett.

The site claims that Yaya's rep didn't reveal why the model/actress decided to end her marriage to Alafia.

Yaya looks very similar to the late singer, as MStars News previously reported. Bassett, who faced criticism from both Whitney's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston, said that she respects everyone's feelings regarding the upcoming film.

Kristina wanted to play her mother, Whitney, and Bassett said that she "respects anyone's feelings," and adds, "I can understand it." Bassett opened up about losing "her own mother," during the film's production.

A rep Kristina reported that, "Bobbi Kristina has no comment on the movie," after Kristina went out on a rampage with tweets blasting Bassett for choosing Yaya for the role.

Whitney's voice will not be a part of Bassett's first directorial film. Singer Deborah Cox will fill those shoes.

Cissy Houston previously made a statement about the anticipated film, revealing that she just wanted her daughter to rest.

"Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family's objections," Houston told ET. "No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby."

Houston continued, "In the two years since Whitney's death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn't know her. We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please, please let her rest."

MStars News wonders if Yaya ended her relationship the same way she protrays Whitney's exit from her own marriage to singer Bobby Brown in the film?

Guess everyone will have to tune in to the new film premiering on Lifetime on Jan. 17, 2015.
