Due to an ongoing NCAA investigation, Syracuse University has self-imposed on itself a postseason ban. In response to potential past infractions, which include possible violations connected to the SU's sports programs, the men's basketball team will not be participating in any post-season play.

According to ESPN, the self-imposed ban includes the NCAA tournament, ACC tournament and The National Invitation Tournament (NIT). There were athletic department violations to the NCAA, that were self-reported 2007. Though school officials said none of the misconduct occurred after 2012, none of the current student-athletes are supposedly involved.

SU basketball coach Jim Boeheim has stated in a press release, "I am very disappointed that our basketball team will miss the opportunity to play in the postseason this year. However, I supported this decision and I believe the University is doing the right thing by acknowledging that past mistakes occurred."

The Syracuse mentions senior Rakeem Christmas unfortunately won't be able to end his career with postseason play. Lawyers are looking into allegations that an ex-worker, Jeffrey Cornish, misappropriated nearly $350,000 of the organization's money. It's unclear whether any of that money was given to SU athletes.

University chancellor Kent Syverud also states, "We have taken responsibility for past violations and worked hard to ensure they are not repeated. I am disappointed for our current men's basketball players who must shoulder this postseason ban. I also recognize that not participating in postseason play will be disappointing for many in the University community and to all Orange supporters."

The last time the mens basketball team missed the postseason was back in 1992. During the season, the team sanctioned by the NCAA, but they were still allowed to play in the Big East Tournament that same year.
