In maybe one of the longest interviews to date with J.J. Abrams after he was announced as the director of Star Wars: Episode VII, the filmmaker revealed a ton of details about 2015's The Force Awakens. He even spoke about some of the fans' concerns about the new character Kylo Ren and his crossguard lightsaber that premiered during the film's teaser trailer last year. On top of that topic, Abrams opened up about his involvement with Disney and Lucasfilm's Episodes 8 and 9, Comic-Con and more!

We've already heard what former Obi-Wan Kenobi actor, Ewan McGregor had to say about the new lightsaber from the teaser trailer, so how does Abrams feel about the concerns surrounding it?

"It was a number of conversations [that led to the design]," he told Collider at a Visual Effects Society event, where he was given an award, according to Slash Film. "It was a sketch that became a whole thing and, you know, this was not done without a lot of conversation and it's fun to see people have the conversation that we had, but in reverse."

Obviously fans would react in different ways to one of the newest versions of maybe the most iconic sci-fi weapons of all time. Abrams finds the criticism and attention to be a little amusing.

"I will say that what's been funny is, since the lightsaber's come out, I cannot tell you how many contradictory emails I have received from people who have both defended it with unbelievably detailed graphics...I've gotten things that are nuts, and I've gotten people who've shown how it'll kill you and how it doesn't make any sense," the director said. "It's been the funniest thing to see the arguments that have developed over this thing."
