When the St. Louis Rams faced off against the Arizona Cardinals during Thursday night's NFL matchup, Rams receiver Danny Amendola dove for a pass that resulted in his walking off the football field with an injured shoulder. Now reports have it that what initially seemed a minor injury was actually something much more serious, even life-threatening. During the play Amendola ended up dislocating his clavicle - but instead of simple popping out (like in most cases), the clavicle popped in and came millimeters from puncturing his trachea and aorta. If that had happened, it probably would have killed him.

When Amendola was seen trotting off the turf holding onto his arm during Thursday's game, many thought it was maybe a broken shoulder or a typical dislocated collarbone. Once the Rams' medical staff discovered that the wide receiver's clavicle had actually popped IN, they quickly put the 26-year-old to sleep before popping the clavicle back into place. Because of the bizarre nature of the injury (never before seen in the NFL) it is impossible to say when Amendola may return to the game.

The Rams ultimately proved victorious over Cardinals, but many teammates are now worried about losing Amendola, a key offensive player. Rams' Sam Bradford told the "St. Louis Post-Dispatch" following the game: "Obviously, losing Danny is big. Everyone knows that he's a big part of our offense. A lot of what we do runs through him."

It has only been five weeks into the NFL regular season, and Amendola has already been targeted 49 times. The former Philadelphia Eagles player leads the Rams with 32 receptions for 395 yards and is tied for the team lead with two touchdowns. Looks like Rams' offense will have to step up its game without Amendola for now, but at least he is currently getting the effective treatment and recovery he needs after facing such an odd life-threatening injury.
