In America, Katy Perry is beloved. She's the quintessential firework - as she put it in one of her songs. Even considering her offbeat beach attire during the Super Bowl, you couldn't be mad at Katy Perry all that much because she's Katy Perry. This might just be an American thing though, as Perry has somehow sparked a political debate in China over the way she dresses.

The picture in question is a flowery yellow dress with the Taiwanese flag draped over her back. You can see the picture right here:

The uproar began during a concert in Taipei, Taiwan on Tuesday. Apparently, some felt what she wore was the emblem of anti-China protests in Taiwan last year. Not only that, but a few weeks ago was the anniversary of the Sunflower Student Movement, which was put together to protest China getting in the way of Taiwanese affairs. The sunflower is the symbol of the tension between the self-sustained Taiwan and China.

This was the second time Perry wore the sunflower dress on stage. The first time was a month ago in China. Although, for that first performance she didn't have the flag as China has tried to ban it. They even went as far as banning it from the 2012 Beijing Olympics. Perry didn't sneak it in though. An audience member handed it to her and she took it from there.

Some fans were happy by Perry's message, while others weren't too pleased. One even called her statement "annoying."

"I'm speechless over Fruit Sister. I suppose she has no chance to come to the mainland anymore, though she might not care," the fan wrote on China's social network Weibo. "These performers who intervene in other countries' politics are the most annoying."

What do you think? Was Katy Perry meddling in foreign affairs?
