The first season finale of The Flash aired on the CW Network. Twitter had lost to say as Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) fought side-by-side against their common enemy, Harrison Wells/ Eobard Thawne aka The Reverse-Flash (Tom Cavanagh) in disguise.
In our recent recap, with the countdown ticking, Barry had to transport his prisoners, including Weather Wizard and Peek-a-boo, to Oliver's prison island. Unfortunately, Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) was planning all along to sabotage the mission and let the prisoners escape. The Flash didn't have to worry though about fighting the Reverse-Flash alone, because the scarlet speedster had Firestorm (Robbie Amell) and Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) giving his enemy an epic beatdown.
In our finale recap, Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) offered Barry a chance to save his mother; in exchange for a ride back home. After running backwards in time, Barry saw his future self warn him not to change the events. Barry stayed with his mother, telling her he loved her, until she died.
In the closing minutes, as the two speedsters fought to the death, Eddie (Rick Cosnett) shot himself, in order to stop the Reverse-Flash; erasing him from existence. The rift in the time-stream caused a black hole to suddenly appear. Putting the mask back on, The Flash raced at full speed to repair the damage.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg reveals Eddie's sacrifice was planned since the beginning, " When we decided to name him Thawne, we hoped the audience would suspect Eddie was the Reverse-Flash because of his last name. We always knew Eddie would be his ancestor, but we weren't quite sure how we would end the season. The way things were moving forward, it felt like it was the best thing to do for his character. Like with Colin Donnell [whose character Tommy died in Arrow's season one finale], it was literally the worst thing we could do to ourselves as writers, producers and friends, because we all love Rick so much both personally and professionally, and we think he's crushed it as Eddie all season. We've all become very close. It's one of those terrible things. The story sort of tells you what it wants to be and as much as it broke our hearts, we knew this was the way the season needed to end."
