Singer Demi Lovato has been rather outspoken about her experiences and struggles with bipolar disorder and addiction, but now she's becoming a voice for the cause to talk about mental illness... and not only through her lyrics. The singer has launched the campaign Be Vocal, which aims to help people struggling with mental illness by talking about it.

Lovato recently spoke with The Huffington Post about the campaign, which the singer admits is "incredible" largely because the "top five mental health organizations have all come together to make this happen." She speaks on the fact that organizations such as The Jed Foundation and the National Alliance on Mental Illness are weighing in their expertise to bring about the immense importance for chatter about this topic.

Further on in the interview, Lovato notes that people want a conversation about mental illness, stating, "...they crave it." But of course, it looks as if it's still heavily looked down upon. But with organizations and campaigns such as Be Vocal, individuals can feel more comfortable bringing up their struggles, largely because the community welcomes them.

"Speaking out about my mental illness was really difficult in the beginning," she says, "because I kind of didn't have a choice." She chalks this up to being in the public eye, but once the singer realized she could make a difference, she thought it was then her responsibility to speak about what she believed in.

"...I want to use my voice in more ways than just singing."
