Rush, Public Enemy, Heart, Randy Newman, Donna Summer and Albert King will be inducted to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the year 2013, it has been officially announced, Dec. 11.

Summer and King will be awarded the honors posthumously. King died in 1992 and Summer in May 2012.  Producers Lou Adler and Quincy Jones will be receiving the Ahmet Ertegun Award in the non-performer category.

"It's a terrific honor and we'll show up smiling," said Geddy Lee, singer and bassist of Rush. "It made my mom happy, so that's worth it."

"It was a cause they [fans] championed. I'm very relieved for them and we share this honor with them, for sure," Rolling Stone reported.

After the induction of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in 2007, Run-D.M.C.in 2009 and Beastie Boys in 2012. Public Enemy will be the fourth hip-hop act that will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"Some people have an idea of what the shape of rock & roll is supposed to look like," said Ann Wilson of Heart. "We're not really it. Personally, that's why I think it's taken quite a while . . . We're always traveling and out there doing it. It can start to feel like you're a tree falling in the forest, but nobody notices. So this kind of acknowledgement is really sweet."

"I thought maybe I'd have to die before they let me in," said Randy Newman who was shocked to hear the news of his induction. "I'm really glad it happened when I was still around to see it . . . They're always a little doctrinaire about what's rock & roll and what isn't rock & roll. It's nice they opened up a little to let me in."

To be eligible for induction, bands or artists need to wait for 25 years after they release their first album. The Hall of Fame has overlooked the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Kraftwerk, the Marvelettes, the Meters, N.W.A. and Procol Harum this year, Fasterlouder reported.

Rock band Nirvana will be eligible next year.

This was the first time that the public was allowed to vote. The induction ceremony will held April 18, 2013 at the Nokia Theatre.
