The New Orleans Pelicans made NBA star Anthony Davis a rich man. ESPN reports the young ball player has agreed to a five-year contract extension with an estimated value of $145 million. The contract will begin in the 2016-2017 season and will run until his 28th birthday. The first round draft pick from the 2012 draft has exceeded the team's expectations and now they rewarded him with the biggest contract in NBA History.

Davis tweeted about the deal at midnight on July 1st. In the tweet, he said that he was staying in New Orleans for six more years.

Team officials, general manager Dell Demps and Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry, jumped at the first possible moment to make a former pitch at Davis' agent Thad Foucher back in May. While the number they threw at Foucher is an estimated one, we'll see just how big the offer is going to be in 2016. During that time the NBA's salary cap is going to rise and the contract is dependent on how far up that cap goes. The deal is a ginormous one but fans of the Pelicans know the value of Davis.

Back in April, he joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain and Bob McAdoo as the only players in history to average at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in their first four NBA playoff games. On top of that, Davis was elected by fans to start in February's All-Star Game. Now because of this New Orleans has the ability to include a provision in his deal that entitles him to start his max deal at 30 percent of the league's salary cap instead of 25%. All teams have the right to give one player this type of contract and in New Orleans Davis is that player.
