Gabrielle Union reflected on the 15th anniversary of her breakout role in the sensational cheerleading movie, Bring It On. Speaking in an intimate interview with Complex magazine, the 42-year-old actress shared her thoughts on the film in today’s perspective, as well as Isis being her breakout role in Hollywood.

The cheerleading film, which also starred Kirsten Dunst, became a big reference to its quotes within pop culture, very similar to the popularity of Mean Girls.

“You know, the reasons people watched it and still watch it are so vast. Other than the dancing and music, a lot of people watched it because it highlighted sexuality—all kinds of sexuality. It made it very normal. A lot of people responded to that,” she said of why the movie became so iconic.

As far as her thoughts on Isis being considered her breakout role, she stated, “Everyone has a different opinion. I definitely saw a marked change after Bring It On in my career trajectory.” The actress mentions that many others do consider her portrayal on Being Mary Jane to be her breakout role.

Union even went onto say that the movie is “still timeless” to today’s movie scene, and it has led her to watch countless cheerleading competitions. She even comments on the racial division in the movie, and how it is still important in current time.

"It was relevant then, and it’s super relevant now. It’s been relevant for a long time. As long as there’s been art and there has been people not getting credit for their art or recognized at all. That is what appealed to me—the appropriation of our culture and winning awards and championships, using routines created and cultivated by black women who never got acknowledged,” she reflects.

Bring It On is still a staple film to many fans of cheerleading, competition, and female empowerment all over the world.
