While making millions shout in laughter as Chandler Bing on the hit NBC series Friends, actor Matthew Perry was fighting his own demons in the form of alcohol. The lead of The Odd Couple has been rather open about his battle with alcoholism over the years, and now he talks staying sober and thanks the work of the Phoenix House rehab center.

In the newest issue of The Hollywood Reporter, Perry's journey to sobriety is detailed after he was honored by the rehab facility. After winning his award, he joked, "I'm an award-winning alcoholic, I guess."

Furthermore, in a more serious tone, he claimed it wasn't he who deserved the award, but those working at the Phoenix House rehab facility themselves.

Back when Perry went to the Phoenix House, he "went on a tour of [the Lake View Terrace facility]." All the while, he notes that getting sober is undoubtedly a "really hard thing to do."

"I've had a lot of ups and downs in my life and a lot of wonderful accolades," Perry claims, "but the best thing about me is that if an alcoholic comes up to me and says, 'Will you help me stop drinking?' I will say, 'Yes, I know how to do that.'"

Perry is now a strong advocate for sober-living facilities and their mission to aid those seeking help. He also admits that he does indeed take advantage of his celebrity at times in order to help further the message.

"The fact that I [am] on TV makes people listen a little bit more..."

Now the Phoenix House holds a program for youths, specifically for high school teens who have trouble with substance abuse. Perry himself even has his own sober-living facility named the Perry House, which THR notes he's relocating from Malibu to either Santa Monica or Studio City.
