Whoopi Goldberg is stepping behind the scenes in the film world, having signed on to produce a new movie on the story of Emmett Till. The Sister Act actress has been spending majority of her time co-hosting The View, but she is going to be dedicating her off time to producing the brand new powerful story into a film. And given the horrific murders and attacks occuring over possible racism as of late, from Michael Brown to the events in Charleston, SC, it seems it's the perfect time for Goldberg's new movie.

The comedian is set to be partnering with Keith A. Beauchamp and Frederick Zollo to cover the story of the slained 14-year-old teenager, who was murdered for allegedly flirting with a white woman in Mississippi. His tragic lynching was a huge igniting to the Civil Rights movement.

The film is set to be called Till, and may go into production as early as next year. It’s reported to be based on the 2004 documentary The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till, as well as Simeon’s Story: An Eyewitness Account of the Kidnapping of Emmett Till.

In order to help fund the movie, a Kickstarter campaign has been launched for production costs.

Goldberg released a statement on the film to Variety, talking about the significance of Till’s story:

“Here is a story that is as much a part of American history as the Boston Tea Party and may stand as the greatest argument for getting rid of sanctioned racism. Emmett Till’s brutal death at the hands of ignorant, brutish people exposes the Jim Crow-era South that gave the implicit OK to uphold that kind of racism without any real fear of repercussions. Today, the return of rampant, unchallenged racism cries out for the telling of Emmett Till’s story again.”

With all of the shootings occurring throughout the country that are stemming #blacklivesmatter protests, this new film on Till’s story is coming at a very important time, and will help shed light on these issues.
