Bridge of Spies is the first collaboration between Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg in 11 years! It seems like the two were happy to be working together again and on a Joel and Ethan Coen script no less. The story was originally scripted by Matt Charman and is also Spielberg's first time directing since Lincoln (starring Matthew McConaughey) back in 2011.

Hanks plays James Donovan, a real-life Brooklyn lawyer from back in the 1950s. He is "charged with negotiating the release of two captured American U-2 pilots from East Berlin. In the latest trailer for the film, we get a glimpse into the public persecution that Donovan and his family had to endure as he worked to free a Soviet spy for a proposed trade," The Hollywood Reporter via Yahoo! News reports. The Soviet spy in question is Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), who captured American U-2 pilot Francis Gay Powers in 1962. Throughout this conflict, Abel begins referring to Donovan as the "Standing Man."

Regardless of their clear opposing beliefs and motivations for their actions, from the trailer's perspective it seems as if the two men make a connection. For instance, Entertainment Weekly explains what Abel says to Donovan about a Soviet man from his childhood, "This man, my father's friend, he was beaten. Every time they hit him, he stood back up again...They hit him harder, still he got back to his feet. I think because of this they let him live." Digital Trends refers to this story KGB agent Abel tells Donovan, "poignant." It is clear that it could make a few Oscar nominations this year.

Abel isn't Donovan's only problem, he "finds out that he has to venture beyond the Iron Curtain, as the negotiation will take place in East Berlin. It's clearly a dangerous place for an American to be, especially given the high-stakes circumstances. Nonetheless, Donovan seems determined to find a way to handle the situation in the best way possible for both sides," Digital Trends reports. The stakes are high and Donovan heads into a risky situation. Knowing that he was in fact a real-life person during a time in our recent history when our country was in grave danger and involved in great conflict, sets us up to be in an intense, action-packed thriller.

We can't wait to see more especially after having seen the trailer! The film hits theaters October 16th. You can check out the official trailer here.
