'Lucha Underground' Season 2 Renewed: Will Mark Burnett, Alberto El Patron Return To El Rey?

From Emmy award-winning Mark Burnett (Survivor), Season 2 of Lucha Underground has been renewed on Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network. After the two-part Ultima Lucha event, the first season finale, will wrestler Alberto El Patron return to the wrestling ring?

As we previously mentioned, El Rey presented audiences with the world of Lucha Libre. Not you typical wrestling show, Lucha Libre made a name for itself with its no-holds barred world of freestyle wrestling and high-flying aerial maneuvers. In Mexico's most popular sport, the masked villains and heroes confront against each other in thrilling one-on-one matches.

According to IGN, El Rey Network, the Survivor creator, and United Artists Media Group have announced that their wrestling series will return for a sophomore season. Lucha Underground will head back into production in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles in the fourth quarter of 2015. After filming and postproduction, new episodes will begin airing on El Rey Network in early 2016.

In his statement, Burnett mentions, "We brought together some of the best athletes from lucha libre and wrestling to fight in Los Angeles this year on Lucha Underground. It was fresh, it was compelling and it got the attention and created buzz across the entire wrestling world."

Rodriguez adds, "The explosive combination of athleticism and storytelling makes for such great television and I'm so pleased that this legendary wrestling tradition will continue to have a home on El Rey Network."

Which wrestlers will show up in the second season? Wrestling Zone Radio conducted an interview with Lucha Underground Co-Executive Producer Chris DeJoseph, who stated Alberto El Patron will be back.

On his official Twitter account though, Patron responded with "not confirmed." DeJospeh then went to say "We haven't set our schedule." We will have to wait and se what happens in the meantime.

Season 2 of Lucha Underground will premiere sometime in 2016.
