The CW has officially set an end date for its supernatural series Beauty and The Beast following a drop in ratings. The recently canceled show has beat the odds over the past four years with surprising renewals each season despite dwindling viewership. Currently in production, season 4 of the modern day fairy tale starring Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan will be its last.

The series created by Sherri Cooper-Landsman and Jennifer Levi is loosely based on Koslow's 1987 CBS series which starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. In the modern story, an NYPD officer and former soldier become romantic partners as the officer investigates her mother's murder.

Beauty and The Beast's ratings were quite dismal over past seasons although the show continues to have a strong base of passionate fans. In a surprise move, the network ordered Season 4 before Season 3 had even aired. As ratings started to roll in, it was clear that the show was nowhere near its 1.61 million viewers it saw during its first season. CW president Mark Pedowitz has previously commented on his admiration of the series:

"I truly like it as a summer series," Pedowitz said at last summer's CW Television Critics Association press tour. "One of our stated goals for the network was to have year-round programming. We're doing more and more of this, and having Beauty and The Beast gives us some scripted programming for summer. We are developing other things at this point for next summer. So I plan to keep it there."

It seems things have changed since the press tour and the network has made the smart move to end the series after the upcoming season. Should they have cancelled altogether, fans may have caused quite the uproar.

Beauty and The Beast's final 13-episode season is expected to air by summer 2016.
