Ben Carson Leading Donald Trump in GOP National Poll as Republican Debate Approaches

As CNBC is prepping itself for Wednesday night's republication national debate, the GOP find themselves with a new leader at the head of the party: Ben Carson. A new national poll reports that Carson's numbers now actually show him beating Donald Trump, causing the former GOP frontrunner to fall to second place.

CNN reports that Carson is showing 26% of primary voters who lean to the right, as opposed to Trump's numbers, which stand at roughly 22%. The last time these polls were done by CBS News/New York Times, Trump was leading with 27% and the neurosurgeon was at 23%.

As of this reporting, Carson numbers are beating the former Celebrity Apprentice star in terms of "women and evangelicals." The two are even, however, with men.

Trump appeared on MSNBC on Tuesday morning's episode of Morning Joe and explained that he just doesn't "get" why the polls are saying Carson is leading him. On the new report, he said, "I don't get it," adding, "I'm going there [to Iowa] actually today and I have tremendous crowds and I have tremendous love in the room, and you know, we seem to have hit a chord. But some of the polls coming out, I don't quite get it."

Tonight's CNBC debate coverage begins at 5 p.m. ET, and like the past debates, there will be two: the "undercard," as Time puts it, and the main event. The first debate, which kicks off at 6 p.m., will house Republicans Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal, Lindsey Graham and George Pataki. The 8 p.m. debate will include the following: Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Carly Fiorina, John Kasich, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Mike Huckabee.
