Konami is interested in bringing the Contra game for the iOS and Android. In collaboration with Tencent, Contra is getting the free mobile device treatment, but the catch is, it will only be available for smartphone users in China.

According to IGN, there will be a new entry in the Contra franchise. The Contra sequel is currently in the works for iOS and Android. This new mobile game has not yet received an official title. The game is currently is being developed specifically for the Chinese market, not for the states.

As the news release states, "This new title is a side-scrolling shooting game developed specifically for Chinese customers as a mobile game for smartphones, and will retain the style and themes that CONTRA fans know and love."

The side-scrolling shooting game will be free to play, but there will be in-app purchases available.

Tech Times reports that rumors have been circulating over the years for the new Contra game. A number of external studios that include Mercury Steam (Castlevania: Lords of Shadow), M2 (Contra Rebirth) and WayForward (Contra 4) have unofficially been linked to develop the latest installment

Dave Cox, producer of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, tells Tech Times, "I think if you're going to bring Contra back you've got to be able to do something unique and intuitive that hasn't been done before. You can't just bring out a generic shooter. You have to have a new idea. I think if we had a new idea and we could combine that new idea with the universe of Contra that would be special. Yeah, watch this space."

No release date has been announced yet for the Contra mobile game.

Readers, would you like to play this Contra sequel?
