Forbes magazine has named Johnny Depp the most overpaid actor of 2015. The annual list is designed to justify the salaries of an actor based on how much money their films earn. Ironically in the last year, the Pirates of the Caribbean star appeared in two less than profitable movies: Mortdecai, co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow, grossed only $47.3 million on a $60 million budget, and Transcendence, co-starring Morgan Freeman, grossed only $103 million of its estimated $100 million budget.

Broken down, for every $1.00 the three-time Oscar nominee was paid this year, his films only brought in $1.20.

To be fair, Forbes only takes an actor's three most recent films made before June and excludes smaller budget and animated films as well as cameos. Of course that plays in Depp's favor since his September released Whitey Bulger bio-pic, Black Mass has also had limited financial success.

Actors directly behind Depp this year include Denzel Washington earning $6.50 per $1, Will Ferrell earning $6.80 per $1, Liam Neeson at $7.80 per $1 and Will Smith earning $8.60 per $1.  Rounding out the list were Christian Bale at $9.20 per $1, Channing Tatum at $10.80 per $1, Brad Pitt at $12.00 per $1 and Ben Affleck at $12.30 per $1.

Noticeably absent from the recent list is Adam Sandler, who's topped it in the past but was ineligible this year due to his recent deal with Netflix.

As far as the husband of Amber Heard, the future looks bright. Depp just completed filming the next installment of the successful franchise in which he portrays Jack Sparrow. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set for a 2017 summer release. The Sweeney Todd Golden Globe winner will also star in the sequel to another successful Disney franchise when Alice Through the Looking Glass enters theaters next May.
