Pakistani Singer Adnan Sami Gets Indian Citizenship, Says "There is No Intolerance in India"

Pakistani singer Adnan Sami, who has spent more than a decade living in Mumbai and singing many Bollywood songs, has been granted Indian citizenship from Jan. 1, 2016 and the singer has finally commented on intolerance in India.

According to The Hindu, a senior official has stated that Sami has been living in India since 2001 and will be granted Indian citizenship under Section 6 of the Indian Citizenship Act. The 43-year-old singer, who got famous in India after singing "Lift Karadey" with Govinda, earlier requested getting Indian citizenship but was rejected two years back. Now, in March 2015, he submitted an application to the Foreigners' Division of the Indian Home Ministry.

  

"In pursuance of the powers conferred by the Citizenship Act, upon taking the oath of allegiance within the time and in the manner required by the rules made in that behalf, he shall subject to the provisions of the said Act, be entitled to all political and other rights, powers and privileges and be subject to all obligations duties and liabilities to which an Indian citizen is entitled or subject, and have to all intents and purposes the status of an Indian citizen," the official releases stated.

When in a recent press event it was asked about his thoughts on Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan's remarks on intolerance the singer said that there is no intolerance. The singer was further quoted by Indian Express as responding: "Had there been intolerance, I would not have taken Indian citizenship. I have never experienced intolerance. There is no intolerance in India," he said.

Sami expressed his gratitude towards Rajnath Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving his Indian citizenship. In other tweet, the singer posted a tricolor picture with a caption: "A New Beginning... A New Feeling... A New Belonging... A New Love Affair... A New Country... JAI HIND!!!."
