John Oliver's HBO series Last Week Tonight is still out on holiday, but the Daily Show alum popped in a new promo to discuss New Year's resolutions for 2016, with one simple and useful piece of advice: lower your expectations!

New Year's resolutions are often the quickest way to get depressed once the calendar changes from one year to another, and the English funnyman knows it, so he's taking action by telling us exactly how we should lower our standards for resolutions until they're things that can actually be achieved.

According to The AV Club, the 38-year-old HBO host recently came out of his Christmas break for a web exclusive clip about New Year's resolutions, sharing the secret how to avoid feeling awful about them.

"The key thing with resolutions is not how to keep them. It's how to revise them once you've failed," said the very wise comedian.

Rolling Stone reports that Oliver suggests accommodating resolutions to more realistic and attainable versions. For example, instead of choosing to exercise more (which no doubt nobody will do), change it up to doing "anything that brings your heart rate up," which can be anything from getting up late for work or even taking a pregnancy test, all of which will surely make your heart work a little more than usual.

Ever since becoming a viral hit with his 2014 monologue about the corruption inside FIFA ahead of the 2014 Brazil World Cup, Oliver has turned into one of the biggest figures in late night television, and we really wish we could get more of him than just half an hour per week.

Unfortunately, Oliver will still be out of our screens for a little longer, as he won't return until February 14, but at least you can watch his New Year's clip in the meantime:
